Outdoors

Welcome to the Outdoors section

This section covers many aspects of enjoying the great outdoors - including hiking, camping, bush-craft, survival, geocaching and navigation.

Survival Skills & Navigation

GPS Notes

Of course if you're going into the outdoors, you will need some basic skills (such as being able to read a map) and equipment (waterproof clothing, boots etc). You will also need to have some plans for when things go wrong. An increasing number of walkers are venturing into the mountains armed only with a mobile telephone. Weather can change quickly and dramatically. You can lose your way. Or you or someone in your party may be injured and you could find yourself unable to get help or find shelter. So it is vital to be prepared both in terms of equipment and in terms of skills. It's important too to make sure your children know what to do if they should get lost or if a parent were to be injured. They can learn from an early age to read maps, make shelters, how to keep warm and how to find food and water. So in this section you'll find lots of information on survival equipment, survival skills - and how to teach these skills to your children.

Outdoors Technology

In this section we also look at modern technology (such as GPS receivers and digital mapping) that can be used in the outdoors both for recreation and survival. This encompasses Geocaching which combines GPS technology, the Internet and treasure hunting into what is now the fastest growing sport in the world! Oh and it's a great way to get exercise too!

Bushcraft

Enjoying the outdoors has a new name - Bushcraft!

It has taken me a little while to get used to this term, but it has grown on me and I'm now happy with it mainly because it encompasses so much more than outdoor pursuits or survival by including more appreciation of nature, reviving forgotten outdoors skills (a subject dear to my own heart), as well as a vision for the future that goes beyond seeing the outdoors merely as a source of entertainment and recreation.

Bushcraft also implies a responsibility on us all to maintain forgotten skills, care for forgotten woodlands and work on enjoying the natural world in concert with it - rather than in spite of it! So please check back regularly to see more articles on the wider subject of Bushcraft ...
