Stop the Internet Explorer Status Bar from Disappearing!
Start with one instance of Internet Explorer. Select View | Status Bar. Now press Ctrl while clicking the X in the upper-right-hand corner of the window to close the application.
Next, open My Computer and select View | Status
Bar. Finally, go to Tools | Folder Options
and select the View tab. Click Apply to all
folders, confirm the dialog, and then close Windows Explorer.

*** Remember to make sure that you have up to date and functional backups of any important information. Make sure that you backup your registry before making any changes to it, no matter how small.

Next, start regedit (Run > regedit )
go to:HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
Make sure the following settings are there:
"Show_StatusBar"="yes"
"Show_URLinStatusBar"="yes"
(if it is not there, enter them)
This problem has been fixed by Service Pack 2. For those on Service Pack 1 you will need to do the following:
Then go to 'Permissions...' from the Edit menu and click 'Advanced'. Find your user name in the list & click 'edit' button and then put a check next to 'Set value' under 'Deny'.
If you have installed SP2 and are experiencing this problem, navigate to the above registry key, go to 'Permissions...' from the Edit menu and click 'Advanced' and remove any special permissions. Click Apply.
Finally go to Explorer, click View, check Status Bar and then Ctrl-close the window.
